History of Bernal Heights Neighborhood

In 1839, Bernal Heights was part of the Rancho Rincon de las Salinas y Potrero Viejo, a 4,446-acre Mexican land grant awarded to José Cornelio Bernal. By 1860, French financier François Louis Alfred Pioche owned the land and subdivided it into smaller lots. During the Civil War, Army engineers from the Presidio laid out its streets, leading to many being named after military figures. Initially, Irish immigrants settled in the area, engaging in farming and dairy ranching. Following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, many displaced residents moved to Bernal Heights due to its stable bedrock and minimal fire damage. The neighborhood saw another population surge during World War II, attracting workers from the nearby San Francisco Naval Shipyard at Hunters Point.
