Bayview–Hunters Point (sometimes spelled Bay View or Bayview) is the San Francisco, California, neighborhood combining the Bayview and Hunters Point neighborhoods in the southeastern corner of the city. The decommissioned Hunters Point Naval Shipyard is located within its boundaries and Candlestick Park, which was demolished in 2015, was on the southern edge. Due to the South East location, the two neighborhoods are often merged. Bayview–Hunter's Point has been labeled as San Francisco's "Most Isolated Neighborhood".
Redevelopment projects for the neighborhood became the dominant issue of the 1990s, 2000s and 2010s. Efforts include the Bayview Redevelopment Plan for Area B, which includes approximately 1300 acres of existing residential, commercial and industrial lands. This plan identifies seven economic activity nodes within the area. The former Navy Shipyard waterfront property is also the target of redevelopment to include residential, commercial, and recreational areas.
The site of present-day Hunters Point began as a pristine, forested, hill-laden peninsula where the Ohlone people lived. From 1869 to 1939, the site was a commercial dry dock area, and a once-flourishing Chinese shrimp fishing community. The U.S. Navy acquired the land on December 29, 1939 to construct the shipyard
According to census data, Bayview–Hunters Point is 33.7 percent African-American, 30.7 percent Asian (22.1 percent Chinese, 3.1 percent Filipino, 2.9 percent Vietnamese, 0.4 percent Cambodian, 0.3 percent Indian, 0.2 percent Burmese, 0.2 percent Korean, 0.2 percent Japanese, 0.2 percent Pakistani, 0.1 percent Laotian), 12.1 percent White, and 3.2 percent Native Hawaiian or Pacific.
Because of its location in the southeastern portion of San Francisco, Bayview residents frequently face long commutes to jobs, health care, education, and other vital journeys that are not within the area. Long journey times increase the likelihood of experiencing traffic congestion or a traffic collision, reducing reliability.
Many developments have occurred in low-income Black communities over the last five years. Politically, community leadership has changed in both techniques and personality types, from a reward-deferral ideology (epitomized by the Baptist preacher) to the direct action who participates and even directs actions wherever they occur.
The Hunters Point way of life is all about respecting the environment without sacrificing quality. It's about fusing contemporary elegance with cutting-edge technology.
Hunters Point Boarding School is a Tribally Controlled School that educates students in grades K-5. This school has a 'Boarding' Residential Status. This school is located in the Navajo Schools Region, and the Education Resource Center is located at Window Rock.
