San Francisco is a city of neighborhoods - each one of them like a small town, with a main street lined with restaurants, shops and bank branches. There is a firehouse, a library, a couple of bars, a coffeehouse or two, some churches and a Muni bus line.
Some are famous: North Beach, the Castro, Chinatown. But I'll bet you four bits that most San Franciscans couldn't even tell you where the Portola district is.
The Portola is tucked away in the southeastern corner of the city, between Bernal Heights and the Bayview. Thousands of cars and trucks roar right by the Portola every day on Bayshore Freeway. It's just off to the right on the way out of town.
Before urbanization, the Portola District's valley and hills were teeming with birds, rabbits, foxes, wolves, and native plants. The original Ohlone people traveled these slopes between Yelamu settlements in the areas now known as Visitacion Valley and Mission Creek for hundreds of years. In the seventeenth century, Spanish conquerors occupied the area, decimating and displacing the Ohlone. The Spanish separated the region into ranchos and titled it "Rancho Rincón de las Salinas y Potrero Viejo," in part because of the salt marshes around Islais Creek, which are now concealed in the Portola. Homesteaders further subdivided the land by constructing small farms, corrals, homes, businesses, and windmill-powered green houses.
How many people live in Portola? Portola has a population of 42,418 people, with a median age of 42.2. Males make up 49.86 percent of the population, while females make up 50.14 percent. US-born citizens account for 48.73 percent of the Portola resident pool, while non-US-born residents account for 38.16 percent.

A wonderful family-oriented community with local business owners. MacLaren Park, San Francisco's second largest park, is located here. It has excellent hiking trails and other day-use places. There are numerous little businesses, restaurants, and pubs nearby.
The Portola Valley School, located at 775 Portola Road in Portola Valley, California, is a one-room schoolhouse. In 1974, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is currently used for Portola Valley town-hall meetings.
The Portola felt a million miles away from that life. It didn't have the gut-punch beauty of so many of San Francisco's neighborhoods, nor the buzz and vibrancy. It was tucked into the city's southeastern corner, with one lone commercial strip and calm residential streets lined with low-slung single-family homes.
