History of Potrero Hill Neighborhood

In the mid-1850s, industry first arrived in Dogpatch. The first settlers were primarily European immigrants. Dogpatch became more industrialized over time, and many residents relocated up the hill to Potrero Hill, transforming it into a residential community. It remained a blue-collar and working-class area until the mid-1990s, when gentrification transformed it into a primarily working-class district zoned by the San Francisco Planning Department to include light industries and small enterprises .

Muni is San Francisco's bus and metro system that operates buses, trains, cable cars, and the F-line heritage streetcar throughout the city. Muni buses remain above ground and on streets while Muni Metro runs on rails and sometimes travel underground.

While a quieter neighborhood overall, it is also home to two punk/indie music venues and the California College of the Arts, which draws students and gives it fuller range of residents. It’s also a relatively racially diverse neighborhood.

The neighborhood vibe changes from north to south, going from a lot of lofts and workspaces for fledgling startups to condos and a mix of Victorians and small homes heading up the hill. Some anonymous and newer “affordable” housing projects can be found on the southern side of the hill. The north side is also seeing some larger apartment complexes being built to accommodate the interests of startup workers.

Schools in Potrero Hill Neighborhood

The two San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) elementary schools serving Potrero Hill are Starr King Elementary School and Daniel Webster Elementary School.[27] Starr King offers the only public mandarin immersion elementary school program on the city's east side. Webster opened in 1936 and has a bilingual Spanish program.[28]

The North Slope is generally more desirable than the South Slope; it is not uncommon for a North Slope house to sell for significantly more than a comparable South Slope house. A home with a view of the San Francisco Bay, the downtown skyline, or Twin Peaks is usually more expensive.
