About Telegraph Hill Neighborhood

While known for its touristy reputation, Telegraph Hill is a serene residential neighborhood. The homes here range from the largest concentration of pre-1870 buildings that were spared by the 1906 earthquake to modern condominiums and everything in between. Residents of the neighborhood, a majority being long-time homeowners, are dedicated to preserving the architectural history of Telegraph Hill’s homes as well as the historic gardens that line the pathways and stairs traversing the area.

Telegraph Hill is one of the most desirable residential communities in San Francisco, doubling as a notable tourist attraction. With bustling and prestigious neighbors like North Beach, Nob Hill and the Waterfront stretched out around its northern and eastern borders, Telegraph Hill boasts one of the most distinctive locations in all of San Francisco.

Telegraph Hill’s distinguishing characteristic is the famous landmark, Coit Tower.

History of Telegraph Hill Neighborhood

In September 1853, the first telegraph in California was installed on the hill, extending eight miles to Point Lobos, San Francisco, and replacing the semaphore, earning the summit the moniker "Telegraph Hill." This telegraph, known as the Marine Telegraph Station, was destroyed by a storm in 1870.

The San Francisco to Telegraph Hill subway route is operated by BART and runs from Civic Center / UN Plaza to Embarcadero. 1526 subways usually run once a week, but check ahead for weekend and holiday schedules.

Telegraph Hill is predominantly a residential neighborhood, much quieter than North Beach, which is known for its lively cafés and nightlife. It is well renowned for its gardens that go down Filbert Street to Levi's Plaza, in addition to Coit Tower.

Schools in Telegraph Hill Neighborhood

Telegraph Hill School, the hill's other secondary school, closed in 2003. A local parents' campaign failed to persuade the council to build a new secondary school on the site.
